Border Leicester Sheep

Border Leicesters are ideal for breeding ewe replacements, and make excellent crosses on most breeds from Suffolk to Welsh Mountain. These crosses make long lived and high performing females. They also have good conformation to produce prime lambs. As a British native breed they have been exported to all corners of the world, and are especially numerous in Australia and New Zealand.

The Frensham Flock (BL53X)

Our flock was established in 1982, with foundation ewes from the Braidwood flock, with the objective of breeding well fleshed, long and correct sheep, which are also vigorous and fertile.

Stud sires which have had a major influence on the flock have come from Stenton, Glenside, and Knockglass.

We select strictly, to keep improving the maternal qualities of our sheep, staying away from industry fads and fashions. As a result we have sheep with natural fleshing, fertility, ease of lambing and good temperament. We are happy to sell rams and females privately off the farm, where customers can come and see the flock, but we also sell at ram sales, notably the big NSA sales.

We have for many years been selling at the Builth Wells ram sale, and have built up loyal customers, who use the Border Leicester to cross on the Welsh Mountain ewe to produce the Welsh Halfbred. More recently other crosses are becoming more popular – notably with the Texel, Suffolk and Lleyn, to produce breeding females and growthy prime lambs.
